How to Find Your Signature Scent

A signature scent is more than just a good smelling perfume – it’s a first impression, a feeling and sometimes a memory.

There is a link between scents and your brain, which causes scents to trigger certain feelings and emotions. Finding your signature scent will shape your identity without having to say a word.

So let’s help you find yours.

Understand Fragrance Families

Before you start testing new scents it’s helpful to understand the basics of fragrances. There are four types of of categories a scent can fall into:

  1. Floral – soft, feminine, romantic (jasmine, rose, orange blossom)
  2. Woody – warm, grounded, earthy (sandlewood, cedar, vetiver)
  3. Fresh – clean, light, herby (citrus, airy, green)
  4. Amber – rich, sweet, bold (vanilla, cardamom, clove)

If there is any that you are drawn to (for example clean laundry smell vs warm sandalwood), you’re halfway there.

Test on Your Skin – Not Just Paper

Perfume smells different on everyone and has stronger notes than on a slip of paper.

When testing:

  • Spray it on your wrist or another pulse point
  • Wait at least 30 minutes
  • See how it develops over time

The scent will develop over time so you will need to wait to be able to get the true scent.

Longevity of the Scent

A signature scent should be long lasting.

Think about:

  • Does the scent fade within an hour?
  • Do you still notice it at the end of the day?

If it is not long lasting then it might not be the one.

What is Your Vibe?

Your scent should match your lifestyle and personality.

  • Do you want a more soft scent or more bold?
  • Is this for everyday wear or only special occasions?
  • Are you wanting a winter or summer scent?

Consider the Season and Setting

Some fragrances are better in certain settings than others.

Daytime and summer – light, fresh scents

Evening and winter – warm, and deeper scents

You can have multiple signature scents good for different occasions.

Give It Time

You don’t have to find your signature scent today.

Take time to try new ones, get multiple samples and use them for different occasions.

Notice:

  • Which gets compliments
  • Which one you keep reaching for
  • Which one feels most like your personality

Over time you will find what is right.

Your perfect scent doesn’t just smell good it becomes a part of your presence.
